Iceland's Ring Road (Route 1) is one of the most rewarding self-drive routes in the world — a single 1,332 km loop that connects every classic Iceland travel package highlight without doubling back. This 9-day Iceland Ring Road tour is the version we book most often for guests who want proper time at each stop, a comfortable 4x4 and hand-picked country guesthouses along the way.
Day 1
Drive: ~250 km
Arrive in Reykjavík, collect your 4x4 and warm up on the Golden Circle loop: Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss.
Day 2
Drive: ~190 km
Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss set the tone before you reach the black-sand beach at Reynisfjara.
Day 3
Drive: ~270 km
Cross the moss-covered Eldhraun lava field to the glacier lagoon and the Diamond Beach.
Day 4
Drive: ~280 km
A slow, cinematic drive along fjords and fishing villages — expect reindeer and empty roads.
Day 5
Drive: ~260 km
Geothermal fields, pseudo-craters and a soak in the Mývatn Nature Baths at sunset.
Day 6
Drive: ~100 km
Iceland's northern capital, whale watching in Eyjafjörður and the 'Waterfall of the Gods'.
Day 7
Drive: ~380 km
The 'Iceland in miniature' — Kirkjufell, black churches and the glacier at the peninsula's tip.
Day 8
Drive: ~200 km
Loop back to Reykjavík with a stop at the Blue Lagoon before your final night in the capital.
Day 9
Drive: —
Transfer to Keflavík Airport — or extend with a Northern Lights night in winter departures.
Route 1 is 1,332 km. It is technically drivable in 24 hours, but a proper Iceland Ring Road tour takes 7–10 days so you have time for waterfalls, glacier lagoons, hot springs and the fjords. Our default itinerary is 9 days.
June to early September has near 24-hour daylight and every mountain pass is open — the easiest driving. Late September to March trades daylight for aurora chances but requires a 4x4 and winter-experienced drivers.
For summer on Route 1 a 2WD works, but a 4x4 is safer for weather and lets you detour onto F-roads (Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk). In winter we only book 4x4s with studded tyres.
A tailor-made 9-day self-drive with mid-range guesthouses, a 4x4 and Golden Circle & Blue Lagoon add-ons typically starts around €2,400 per person in shoulder season and rises for peak summer and winter aurora dates.
Yes — from late September through March, on any clear night away from Reykjavík's light. The east fjords, Mývatn and the Snæfellsnes peninsula are all reliable dark-sky stops on this route.
Tell us your dates and party size — we'll come back within 24 business hours with a tailor-made 9-day self-drive quote, or a winter version built around the Northern Lights.
